Later 90s models added ESP or G-Protection buffers that survive walking and cycling. Check the laser sled by playing a lightly scratched disc, listen for tracking noise, and inspect the lid hinge — that is the part that snaps on well-loved units.
A CD is uncompressed 16-bit/44.1kHz audio. Played through a decent portable DAC stage and wired headphones, it still outperforms most default streaming tiers, which is why collectors never fully let go of the format.
